About me
Hi, I’m Heidi and I’ve spent the last 25 years teaching young people to be knowledgeable about sexuality and empowered to make healthy decisions. I love my work, and in my experience, teaching and talking about sex and bodies and puberty and relationships can be… well, FUN!
I’m also a parent of two children, and the auntie of four more, I get that when it’s with the kids in your own family, these conversations can also be challenging, scary and sometimes super awkward. Professionally, I’ve worked since the 90s for non-profit organizations, public health departments, and school districts, all with a focus on community health and sexuality education. I teach Sexuality Education and Training at CSU Monterey Bay and have trained teachers and health educators across the US as well as internationally. I have Masters degrees in Public Health from UC Berkeley School of Public Health and in Education from Harvard University.
All that being said, I decided to start my own business guiding parents because I believe that while schools and community organizations have an important role in promoting sexual health of young people, PARENTS ARE THEIR CHILDREN’S PRIMARY SEXUALITY EDUCATORS and there is just not enough support out there to help parents do this well. Plus, talking about sexuality can be GREAT and EMPOWERING and I learn something new with every conversation and workshop.
I am often approached by parents who just want some information or reassurance that what their child is doing or asking is “normal.” Sometimes, parents want help thinking through a particular question or issue that has come up for their child as their child approaches another stage of development. I’ve read a gazillion books about these topics, done tons of my own research, listened to many experts and “sexperts” over many years, and talked to hundreds of parents. I’ve been able to adapt many of the skills that I have taught teachers and health educators over the years for parents.
I REALLY GET IT when it comes to needing creative ideas for parent-child communication around these issues, and I love to share what I know.
So let’s talk!
